: Hi Ian and all,
: I am of a different school of thought on this issue. I belive that by
: learning as many different rolls as possible you develop an understanding
: of the process that transends the particular roll that you use most often.
: In plain english, every new skill becomes another tool for you to use when
: the sh*t really hits the fan.I agree completely with Jed. You can't know too much about rolling and the skills associated with it.
In the course of learning a dozen or so rolls, I learned that I'm actually better at reverse sweep rolls than I am at forward rolls, and also that I'm better at one-handed rolls on my off-side. I also learned that a balance brace is a great recovery from a blown roll. I had practiced it more or less as a skill building exercise, but actually had to use it a couple of weeks ago when I blew a one-handed roll, and it worked!
I would agree that when first learning to roll, you should concentrate on getting the one you can do to be automatic, but don't be afraid to explore variations once you get it. You might be amazed at what you'll learn.
Enjoy!
Wayne
