Drysuit vs. Dry Top & Pants

Any comments on dry suits vs. dry tops used in conjunction with dry pants?

The latter seems like it might be more versatile and possibly less expensive (Kokatat Gortex top is $315 plus Kokatat dry pants $125 vs. $600-$700 for Gortex suit). I wonder if the combination affords similar protection while in the water.
