Well said. While there are obvious advantages to opening ones eyes underwater during a roll or other manouver, there are other advantages to being able to correct for a stalled roll by feel alone. For as many examples as the "eyes open" camp offers, I can offer other examples where the ability to perform the manouver "eyes closed" could be advantageous. I never claimed one way was better than the other, rather that both methods can be developed to equal value depending on what the paddlers situation is and I feel that proficiency using both methods is vaulable.
I do open my eyes during eskimo rescues so I can look for the other boat and avoid rolling up into their hull just as they finally get to me with my lungs screaming for air. I wonder about people thinking that one method is bad versus another method. There is a lot of room in this sport for artistic interpretation and personal preference. And in the final analysis people will use what they find comfortable to use. I'm very much in favor of the discussion and information sharing, and I find I learn more and more the longer I listen to what everyone else thinks. So, I will practice opening my eyes more and who know? Next year I mayfind myself in the "eyes open" camp.
Have fun!
Jed ;-)
