Yes, Craig it is possible and quite easy to roll with your eyes closed. I spent a full year rolling in all kinds of conditions with great success until I was informed by "He who shall remain nameless" that only idiots roll with their eyes closed. "How do you expect to know where you are?" he quipped. And stupid me with only success to support my arguement quickly succumed to his lordship and bowed my head in self-disgust. Never again to feel proud for rolling with using my eyes.
I'm quite ashamed to admit publicly that I still roll without the benefit of sight. I learned long ago that my particular eyes are nearly useless under water and the thought of flushing my sensative eyes with poluted water didn't do much to change my view, so to speak.
Hey, I thought you were moving "out east"? When are you expected to be near Boston? We've got the pool sessions all set-up, and several people that would love to screw-up, er I mean, help you develop your roll.
It sound like you don't have a great "feel" for the set-up position. Toss the mask or just close your eyes, and feel the surface of the water against your forearms or your forearms against the gunwales of your boat. Pull yourself to the surface before and during the sweep with your abs and not your paddle. Then just hipsnap for all you are worth. The other details will work themselves out. Oh, and once you have learned how to feel your position, then for the love of God, OPEN YOUR EYES. Only an idiot would ever roll a kayak with his eyes closed! My God man, Get a grip !!
LOL Jed ;-)
