: Do people roll with their eyes closed? Can't imagine that! Any
: other suggestions?I wear contacts and always keep my eyes shut while rolling. I learned initially using a dive mask to watch the blade but soon thereafter I practiced with my eyes shut and learned by feel. There are a number of environments (surf churned with sand, extremely cold water, etc) where opening your eyes underwater is not wise. Your sense of feel as to the orientation of your body to the kayak and to the waves will grow so keen with practice that visual input is completely unneccessary.
: Another rolling question. I seem to have a pretty reliable PRACTICE roll on
: either side but when I do miss it, I have a hard time setting up again. You may be letting your torso hang lower and lower into the water. This shouldn't be a problem if you always achieve the same set-up position for successive tries with the paddle held against the side of the kayak and your head almost kissing the deck. You will have to actively crunch your abdominal muscles to keep your torso close to the surface.
