Like Murray said, I taught myself alone using a paddle float. I think it's an advantage to learn and practice wet reentries anyway, and it's fun! And as others said, using the paddlefloat has made me too "arm-heavy", I will break a paddle before long, or pull a shoulder. I'm working to correct it but have slowed down considerably in the cold. (Whetstone for X-mas?) The class really helped to point out errors, but I'm not sure I would have been successful learning from scratch in one class. All the practicing beforehand really helped a lot.
With the float, I started with hipsnaps and continued to lower myself further and further down, kind of learning the roll backwards.
You might look at the local pool schedules, often they have a time slot open to kayaks just for this, and you'll find others there to watch and help / be helped. Not as good as a good formal instructer, but the water's a lot warmer than Flathead Lake!
