: . Can anyone
: Hello Jo!
: An additional suggestion to the list of excellent advice you've received so
: far; this one from my own experience attending sea kayak rolling classes
: here in western Montana this summer on our make-believe sea, Flathead
: Lake.Ugghh!!! Learning to roll on Flathead Lake? Brrr...
I'm a big fan of learning somewhere warm, and then just rolling at Flathead!!By the way, I just took a new job, and they're going to have me move to Kalispell in a year--we'll have to get together and play when the waves kick up!
: Anytime you're practicing intentional capsizes and wet exits, which
: often seem a requisite part of learning to roll, I suggest that you use
: ear plugs (as well as nose plugs) to keep the ears protected against
: ingress of cold water. I ended up fighting an ear infection for weeks
: following the classes. That part was bad enough, but even barring the
: contracting of an ear infection, the nausea, disorientation, and dizziness
: that is experienced during the class brings your hoped-for progress to a
: virtual halt. I guess I should add that I am definitely a water baby and
: was discouraged that anything could dampen my enthusiasm having an excuse
: to be submerged. A sports medicine M.D. friend of mine, tells me that the
: sure-fire prescription for making someone dizzy, disoriented, and nauseous
: is to put water into their ear canals which is even only a degree and a
: half above or below normal body temp. I didn't ask him how he was so
: knowledgable about that "Rx".: By the by, I'm in favor of the good look around (and reorientation) you can
: enjoy by use of a face mask when learning wet exiting and rolling!: Best of safe paddling!
