Shawn, I think you offer great advice re: whitewater folks as coaches. In a river or surf the roll must be instinctive for obvious reasons. I think their methodology is super for sea kayakers. As for your comment about the best sea kayakers maybe having better rolls I think that may be a stretch. There is something to be said for the smaller boats being more forgiving of bad technique. But what I ofter see with sea kayakers who can roll, even hand roll, in calm water, is a severe lack of combat rolling practice. Often these same folks swim in real world big conditions. The river boaters learn combat techniques well due to their environment. So to me a great roller is one who I don't tow in through the surf. Chris Cunningham's intro to the rolling article in the last issue of Sea Kayaker was excellent at illustrating this. So I think all sea kayakers should learn the roll immediately if they aspire to any sort of competence as paddlers. I'll get flamed for that, but it seems such a shame that folks argue against it with so much energy as apposed to just learning the skill and enjoying what a kayak can do. How can anyone who cannot roll truly develop good boat handling skills? Take care.
