In Response To: More technique queries (Jo Lefler)

Are there pool sessions nearby where you could learn to roll from a whitewater kayaker? They have better rolling skills than the average sea kayaker (I don't think the average sea kayaker knows how to roll--but that shouldn't keep you from aspiring to be above average!!) That said, the best sea kayakers are possibly much better than the best whitewater kayakers. I don't want to start a holy war here, but was just trying to illustrate a point. I think most aspiring whitewater kayakers realize that a roll is necessary, but most aspiring sea kayakers (who are often told so by an eager retailer) think a roll is unnecessary for all but the best kayakers. Kudos to you for wanting to learn more--we don't want to flame you, we should be congratulating you for having those concerns about your own safety and skills development!

Once you learn a basic roll, you should feel a lot less nervous about going out to your local pond and trying to learn some new rolls and work on sculling, bracing, and advanced paddle strokes. At least you've got one way to "de-capsize"!!

By the way, where do you live?

Shawn

: I fully expect to get blasted for the first part of this post, but here it
: goes anyway. I'm a beginner to the sport with only a couple of months in
: the boat and seem to be the only sea kayaker within 50 miles of my home.
: This situation forces me to be a solo boater as a companion can't be found
: to accompany me during the 2-3 sessions weekly. All due care is taken to
: approach the sport safely in my solo situation: quiet, shallow water,
: populated area, all safety gear, etc. My query to you experienced folks is
: as follows: I practice bracing, sculling and manuverability exercises in
: my sessions. I don't feel comfortable practicing rolling alone. Can anyone
: detail more drills and exercises to help my techniques along, that I can
: execute solo safely? Extensive reading and web surfing haven't given me
: any help. Thanks in advance.
