Joe, Paddling alone is great provided you do the sensible things that you are doing. As your skills progress and judgement evolves you may find yourself doing many trips alone. I sea kayak alone a lot! I agree with the above posts and think that if you visit past posts from Don Beal you'll see a progression from wanting to learn alone to fully understanding the value of instruction. So I too recommend a trip to an instructor for rolling. I'm currently teaching a young woman to paddle, and the very first thing I did was to teach her to get out of her boat upside down, then roll on both sides. By learning to roll immediately, students progress much faster, as they have learned numerous skills in the process of rolling, and they are not afraid to edge their kayaks and push their limits with maneuvering strokes etc. She is learning sooo fast and in six days is technically far superior to some who've paddled for years. All the skills are easy, they just require practice. The above listed books are good, as are Nigel Fosters books. He has a good style. Also back issues of Sea Kayaker have good tid bits on skills etc.. Visit their web site. Take care. MH
