: I fully expect to get blasted for the first part of this post, but here it
: goes anyway. I'm a beginner to the sport with only a couple of months in
: the boat and seem to be the only sea kayaker within 50 miles of my home.
: This situation forces me to be a solo boater as a companion can't be found
: to accompany me during the 2-3 sessions weekly. All due care is taken to
: approach the sport safely in my solo situation: quiet, shallow water,
: populated area, all safety gear, etc. My query to you experienced folks is
: as follows: I practice bracing, sculling and manuverability exercises in
: my sessions. I don't feel comfortable practicing rolling alone. Can anyone
: detail more drills and exercises to help my techniques along, that I can
: execute solo safely? Extensive reading and web surfing haven't given me
: any help. Thanks in advance.Jo
You won't get blasted here for being a beginner. I think everyone here wants to help. Rolling alone is difficult, because everytime you fail you need to wet exit. When someone is with you, they can stand beside the boat, grab the combing and put their body weight into righting you. If they are in a kayak, they can do Eskimo rescues, saving you time to wet exit, empty out the boat and start again. So you need to get a training partner at the very least.
Have a look at the archived discussions from this site on rolling. Most of us recommend that you get a teacher. You can be self taught, but it is slow going and you often pick up some bad habits.
The first thing you need to master is the hip snap, because rolling is just a hip snap with a paddle being used for stability and rebound during the roll. Maybe Greg Stamer is reading this post, if so, he can help you. MT, Jed and Murray are all good rollers and hopefully they will answer this post also.
The Grace Under Pressure video is very good, as is the book, The Bombproof Roll and Beyond. Derek Hutchison's book is excellent, he has one on rolling.
Hope this helps, it is tricky to learn rolling alone and a bit risky, but as been done, several people on this discussion page have done so.
Buy a scuba mask and get very good at wet exiting
Good luck
David
