: Hello everybody: Just wondering if kevlar becomes more brittle then glass
: in the colder temps?Nope, they're the same, and both impervious to cold at the temperatures I think you're thinking of. The glass/kevlar matt itself is flexible, and the resin used for both is usually identical vinylester. They do not soften in heat, nor become brittle in cold. Epoxy/glass is commonly used in skis, and kevlar is used in outer space. The thermal structural properties of resin become fixed once its chemically cured.
But........kevlar hulls can be thinner than glass which is where the weight savings come from (pound for pound its stronger than Fglass), and kevlar is harder to repair if cracked than glass. So in a production hull, I'd be more careful re: impact with kevlar. I've worked with both and wetted Fglass cloth is easier to work with than kevlar.
Ray.
