: David, I don't see you and Tim at odds here, he was describing fairly benign
: conditions for that group "warm, calm". Now 55degree water is a
: different element that you added to the mix. Certainly 70 degree air, 50
: degree water and rescue distances that put the person in the water for
: more than a minute are not worth allowing. The other scenario he describes
: is one or two more paddlers of similar skill for 4mph. Two or three
: similarly matched paddlers of the sort that paddle regularly wouldn't have
: much dificulty with 4mph which I think of as a brisk paddling cadence.: I do agree with you that managing a group of beginning paddlers that 2.5 mph
: is a realistic average. With the 5 person groups that constitute my
: classes all it takes is one person that can't manage steering without a
: rudder in 1ft waves and 10mph breeze for the average to drop to 1mph or
: -2.5mph (return to the cove). Thanks Lee, I kind of feel like David blasted me and then made some points that for the most part agree with what I was trying to get at.
I probably should have been a little clearer about the conditions I was describing when the group spreads out. I was talking about mid-summer lake paddling in Georgia. This is when people capsize on purpose to get the hell out of the heat! The other point I was making is that demanding conditions require that you either accept a much slower schedule or specify certain criteria for the group and stick to it.
