: Recently I have been involved in planning and organizing trips for small
: groups of sea kayakers and have never given much thought to how fast I can
: go.I'm not a numbers freak and I paddle for other reasons, when I get there
: I get there and thats OK.When your planning for a group these calculations
: take on importance.
: Does anybody have an idea how fast sea kayaks go.I'm not talking about
: olympic class paddlers on surf skiis just intermediate to experienced
: paddlers in medium
: and high performance sea kayaks in calm conditions (I can factor in wind and
: current penalties).Anybody have a idea in miles per hour? I'm Canadian but
: still don't know what a kilometre looks like.
: Thanks Bert
A couple suggestions to help the wannabe racers and leisurely paced people enjoy the day together. Suppose you are putting in 2 miles downstream from a bridge and paddling 4 miles downstream to an island. Tell the faster people to paddle up around the bridge and all will meet down at the island. Or have the 4 fast ones go on a minitrip around an island to really stretch it out. The main rule is to establish rules ahead of time as to who is leader(safety director). But kaywakers are often loners doing their own thing. My post about fatal attraction was a nasty tale about us planning a trip the weekend of 100mph race boats and we could have been killed. But on the subject of speed- the speed of my boats does separate me from other people so in the spring I might join a sprint race club. If you go to www.nymcra.org/ , you might see that quite a few people in their 40's can do a 25 mile race in 3.5 hours. It does require some training and effort but if I am not putting forth some effort then why bother? It might be inspirational to some to know it is possible to start paddling in your 40's and work up to a 90 mile race that is 30 miles a day with 5 miles of carrying. The main barrier to most is getting too fired up about tv to really do something in your own life. Happy paddling and may I please suggest you mention to those with a need for speed that there are 10- 15 mph kayaks out there waiting for someone to rip holes in the water and really blast along in the power of God Almighty!
