Bert, I can comment on this subject with some authority, as I've guided a few hundred folks on extended trips. I think the above folks (RAY and BIG LEGUME) are accurate. Remenber though that a statute mile is not a nautical mile. A nautical mile is 1.15 times a statute mile (rounded up) I think 3 nautical miles per hour is a good estimate. For strong paddlers 4 is easy. Most groups have had a good day at 10 knots, while I've had groups of strong kayakers go 38 knots in a day. Best in the Northwest to start early in the morning and be at camp by early afternoon before the winds pick up. Of course current and wind GREATLY affect things, so plan accordingly. Most folks who think they paddle fast truly do not. Strong p[addlers in fast boats can do 5-6 knots per hour.
