Hi Shawn, My all around favorite headgear for coldwater paddling and immersion is a fuzzy rubber hood by rapidstyle after that is a divers head liner (fuzzy lycra) that covers neck to shoulders, temples and jaw. The two together are adequate for very cold immersion but are much better than neoprene for comfort and above water paddling. Neoprene can be too warm and it makes it hard to hear things. A hood liner or fuzzy rubber can be worn on the neck and pulled over your head when needed.
For too much time in the water then neoprene and liner become a great combo.
