Hi Mary - Excellent question. Give us an idea on where you live, as that can have an influence on what you need to buy. Here in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area, a wetsuit typically extends the paddling season about one month on each end of the season. But for deep winter you should have a dry suit as the water can hover around freezing.

Shawn gave some excellent tips one what to look for and possible combinations. The important part is to test what you decide to use, under controlled conditions.
