: Don,
: You may want to think twice about changing paddles just for rolling. If your
: current paddle is a Greenland style, then you will find out shortly that
: they are easier to roll with than most Euro paddles. The fact that you
: notice a difference between paddles for rolling tells me that you are
: over-relying on the paddle for support. Work to eliminate the dependence
: on the paddle during the roll and then which paddle you use or wether you
: even use a paddle to roll will become unimportant.: It sounds like you are pulling down on the paddle during your roll, don't!
: Near the end of your sweep, rotate the hips fully while keeping your arms
: rigid then you'll just use the paddle to assist the recovery. The
: Sweep/Screw roll is easier in this regard but the same is also true for a
: C to C roll. Good luck!Don,
I agree with Jed's advice. Practice with the same paddle that you intend to use. Once you have refined your roll to where you can perform a hand roll, rolling with any paddle is extremely easy.
A Greenland paddle works so well due to the tremendous amount of lift that it generates during the sweep. At this stage of your roll your sweep is probably weak or diving slightly and you are relying on pure surface area at the end of your roll to make it back up. All the paddle does at the end of the roll is to give you a rebound effect from being near the surface at the time that you hipsnap. Yanking down on the blade can damage your paddle or your shoulder.
As you get better your sweep and hipsnap will become both more subtle and efficient. Also expect to have some days where it seems that you have "lost it all", all part of the normal learning process.
Keep at it!
