: For going on anything longer than a day trip, they are out of the
: question. No storage

No Storage? I could pack for a month in my SOT! Perhaps you have only been exposed to the surfing type and are unfamiliar with touring SOT's, some of which offer large hatches and plenty of interior room.

: , no protection from wind and waves, even with a dry
: suit you will eventually get sick of being exposed to :bad conditions.

People vary greatly in how much cold and wet it takes to spoil their fun. Individual tolerance will determine whether the lower body exposure in a SOT is a problem. Remember, safety requires you be dressed for a swim whether your boat is open or covered.

: In heavy seas, getting back on the boat can be a :
:challenge, as can paddling
: the boat.

In all conditions, getting back on a sit-on-top will be far easier than reboarding a decked boat. And, contrary to popular belief, SOT's can be rolled. SOT paddlers are not excused from self-rescue practice!

: Big waves and currents still affect you.

On challenging water, speed is safety, and even the sleekest SOT is slower than a "real" sea kayak. If you are planning long crossings in difficult water, a sit-on-top is not for you.

: As an investment, if
: you have no other kayak, it will provided very limited :possibilities

A sit-on-top offers different, not fewer, possibilities. Because of the ease of launching and landing, and the ability to hop out and drag the boat over bars and other obstacles, you will be able to visit places not accessible to closed boats. Most SOT's are also suitable for moderate river paddling.

: the whole body English aspect of kayaking is lost.

Not if the boat is equipped with thigh straps or seat belt and back support.
