Hi Frank: I use a chopped down canoe paddle as a spare for both sea kayaking and whitewater. I too come from a solo canoe heritage and feel comfortable with the single blade on both on-side and off-side stokes.
The canoe paddle works particularly well in my WW play kayak that does not have sufficient room to store a traditional break down kayak paddle.
Always remember, half the paddle, twice the paddler!
