In Response To: Sit On Top vs. Standard & Safety (Craig Bumgarner)
Hi Craig, sit on tops make lots of sense. The tsunami rangers use a wash deck kayak with hip belt for rough use, a few folks on the west coast have converted Mariner Coasters to sit on top. I chickened out when I made my North Bay but considered making a sit on out of it. The issue isn't so much which design is "safer" but whether the design meets ones needs. Closed decks originate from a time when immersion was not an option. Neoprene and drysuits change that consideration. I wonder if those folks that got into trouble in all the accident reports would have been better off on sit-ons because they were dressed for immersion from the start. Maybe nows the time to have a summer/winter kayak.
