Padding one's cockpit?

: ...another paddle. Perhaps I can add a
: take-apart fitting to my old one.

As a great philosopher always used to comment: GOOD GRIEF....(deep sigh)

But why not get several paddles? And one can always borrow, rent, or swap with a friend. Using different kinds of paddles concurrently will reveal interesting things about this sport.

: I understand, at least partly, how the boat affects it. This is whats
: confusing because the CLC should be the harder boat to roll. But it's not.
: Once you get it past being 'upside-down' it wants to come upright. It's
: pretty easy to fall out of either boat, though the hip pads in the CLC do
: have some curve in them and the SpringRun pads are flat. They hold pretty
: well side-to-side but its the knee pads that keep me in the boat. My son
: doesnt know it yet, but his Walrus will have a low rear deck....

I have often, and I believe I'm not alone here, figured out "a priori" how something should effect things, and later on seen that the effect has in fact been almost the opposite. One needs to test things to see how they really come out, kayaking is like that.

And not only kayaking, John Dowd has a lovely anecdote in his book about a yacht designer, whose finest new boat actually did better when sailed (in a test tank) stern first!

The thing about the pads may deserve comment: padding one's hips will give a better feel of the movements of the boat and better control, but what about the Petrussen maneuvre? That should become more difficult... Always a trade-off.

It would be interesting to learn what people have come to prefer in sea kayaking: hip pads, thigh braces, knee pads... Is a loose fit in the seat area to be preferred if one has a solid bracing of the thighs (knees) and footrests, or does one want all of these?
