: Nick: What's the difference between a "wing" paddle and a dihedral
: design?: FBC
Wing blades are curved like a spoon to grab unto more water. Compare lifting 7# of wet gravel from the ground to a wheelbarrow with a flat shovel but only 4# is actually moved because so much falls off. Or with a round shovel you lift 7# and 6 # gets into the wheelbarrow. Not necessarily easier but more efficent. And there is an airfoil principle with water grabbed by the edge. But if you buy one with too wide a blade, you might find it rips your joints because it can feel like paddling with a snow shovel and grab too much water. This does force you to lead with a straight right arm with right leg bent. Straighten your right leg to begin your stroke with shaft quite vertical and rotate as if there is a rope from right hand to right shoulder blade. Take the wrist and elbow out of the equation or you will not have them for long because the big wings require the big thigh muscles to rotate your body. Fred mechini has excellent free downloads at the usack site. The reward is I did 5 miles slightly downstream in 37 minutes or 8mph in a seda glider with me at 230# or about 17 pizzas overweight and 49 years of age. It is good for my ego to beat guys half my age.
