FBC, My post, though harsh, reflects my experiences, both professionally and privately in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Like you I have much experience a range of outdoor activities both privately and professionally. It is this data base so to speak that makes the contrast so striking to me. I've chatted with others in the business and we all seem to report more unfriendliness in recent years. So my point is, that we are approaching a level of interest and use in our sport that can exceed the environments ability to accept it, unless we do a better job of getting along. As I write this I'm preparing to do a trip to Barkley Sound BC with some friends. We have two choices in planning our trip.
1. We can monopolize a camp area, and be aloof and non-welcoming of others. We can fantasize about having an Island all to ourselves - It's Oct.!
OR
2. We can be realistic and know that we will be sharing an area with others. We can camp in such a manner that we minimize our tent requirements, and
set up camp in a way that allows others a spot. And, we can be friendly
and welcoming of others who may have the same desire to enjoy the area as
we do.
In the kayaking business i just don't see "getting along and looking out for your fellow traveller" skills taught nearly as well as they are in the alpine environment for example.
On a positive note, I think it's a case of evolution, and we'll be forced into being nicer simply as a result of huge increases in use.
