: I guess I'm a little confused here. I did find that rolling 360 could be
: disorienting, but with the dive mask I was able to look and see what was
: wrong with the setup, and fix it. I'm confused as to why it matters what
: the orientation with the rest of the world is; it seems to me that what
: really matters is the orientation for the setup, or the spatial
: orientation from paddler to boat. Once up, if the compass is facing a
: different direction than you thought it ought, well, not really a big
: deal? Or am I missing something? Many people get confused when they tuck the paddle on their left side on the surface and are told that they will be sweeping a wide arc on their right side after they capsize. At first it doesn't seem physically possible. The movement only becomes possible *after* you capsize and thinking about it too much on the surface can leave some analytical types with a bad headache. I find that the confusion is eliminated if you stand on the right side of the student's kayak (assuming that they tuck on the left) and capsize them toward you so that they can easily see how their tuck position puts the paddle in the perfect position for the sweep without any additional action on their part.
