Carried many boats over the years on kayak trailers, big 15 pac van roofs with bars, on my truck etc. Usually on their side or upside down on padded bars. Upside down helps with overheight issue on ferries. Never a problem in spite of hellish B.C. logging roads etc. Plastic boats require more care to prevent oil canning, but it's common sense. I used to have Yakima saddles years ago, but would not consider any of those gadgits now. If I haven't had a problem I doubt ya'll will. My advice is keep it simple with well padded crossbars and use quality nylon straps. Boats on edge do fine, and I always carry my boats upside down with no problems, rain water, dirt, etc. For bars buy the thick pipe insulation and attach it with heavy cable ties. Have fun.
