Hello Jim!
I agree with Ray about station wagons. I drive a Subaru Legacy wagon and often kayak alone, so the easy lift onto a lower vehicle is a real plus for me. In Montana where we have plenty of snow, the four-wheel drive of the Subaru wagon is another plus, because I like to kayak just as long as there is open water at some lake in the area.
I use a Thule rack with the old style H-2-Go cradles and can easily fit two sea kayaks on the racks in a normal deck-up attitude. This is also important to me, as I am not sure how hard it is on a fiberglass hull to carry it any great distance on edge, as a person can do with whitewater kayaks; at least I am concerned about the hull sagging in very hot weather when carried in the on-edge attitude. Maybe a more experienced owner out there can advise you on that matter.
If gas mileage and gear-carrying capacity are important to you, these are two more pluses of the Subaru.
