Hi Dave,

I use an old blanket that I throw on the roof and then slide the kayak up.

I built a ladder up the back of the van and attached it to the left hand door so that the door will still open and close. This makes it easier to climb up and then I built a walkway so that I am actually right up on top of the van when I load the kayak.

I have never had a wind problem while driving the van but have had one when loading the boat at a lake. It was very windy when I returned from a paddle and loading the boat was a little harder because of the fear that it would be blown off before I got it in the rack. Wasn't much of a hassle and I could have avoided it by loading further from the lake to avoid the wind.
