: IMHO, 'Grace Under Pressure' is pretty good, BUT you guys just GOT to see
: 'Rolling with Maligiaq' to get the whole picture. Here's a guy who treats
: a roll just like a morning stretch just after turning off the alarm clock.
: The roll is sssslllooooowwwwwwwww - no hip "snap" with its
: implied (and real) overstressing of muscles and paddles, just a
: deliciously approachable-by-everyone sinuous movement that reduces his
: roll axis moment of inertia allowing a gentle sculling force to pick his
: head back up over the boat. Stop getting macho over a roll, you don't need
: strength to get it done. You do need coordination and timing, and with
: those even a skinny (2.75 inch wide) Greenland paddle will get you back
: up.I would just like to point out something implied in Roger's post. Rather than finishing a roll to the side, as done for a C-to-C roll, the vast majority of Greenlandic rolls are performed with your body finishing by leaning foreward on the foredeck or back on the aft deck. This is well-documented on the video.
The closest thing to a C-to-C roll that the Greenlanders do is their storm roll (this is John Heath's wording not Derek Hutchinson's). To perform this roll some Greenlanders use an extended paddle, some hold the paddle with their hands in a normal paddling position and capsize in an extreme forward tuck, the paddle is swept to 90 degrees and you snap up, staying tucked forward throughout the roll. During the sweep the paddle shaft rubs against the hull and is often levered off the hull during the final snap. You can use either side of the paddle (high brace or low brace). This is a great roll for extremely windy conditions.
