IMHO, 'Grace Under Pressure' is pretty good, BUT you guys just GOT to see 'Rolling with Maligiaq' to get the whole picture. Here's a guy who treats a roll just like a morning stretch just after turning off the alarm clock. The roll is sssslllooooowwwwwwwww - no hip "snap" with its implied (and real) overstressing of muscles and paddles, just a deliciously approachable-by-everyone sinuous movement that reduces his roll axis moment of inertia allowing a gentle sculling force to pick his head back up over the boat. Stop getting macho over a roll, you don't need strength to get it done. You do need coordination and timing, and with those even a skinny (2.75 inch wide) Greenland paddle will get you back up.
Have fun. --roger
: I agree with David here. For some it's just easier for them to focus on a
: good sweep while relaxing the torso and following the blade with the
: torso. What you often see is that they THINK they are sweeping way back
: when in fact they are just getting positioned to do a hip snap. I use all
: sorts of weird tricks to get people to do what I want them to all the
: while letting them think they are doing what they want. Sounds strange,
: but it works. Perfect example is a San Juan guide I worked with this
: summer. Very strong and also stiff. Guy was locked under the kayak. By
: focusing on loosining up and sweeping his torso around with head IN THE
: WATER he quickly had a powerful sweep roll with a strong snap. Now I'm
: having him focus on snaping sooner and he is doing very well. I tend to
: hammer people pretty hard once they are rolling, as this is just the
: start. Tricks like 10 rolls in 30 seconds, etc.. get them to be more
: instinctive. I like what Jed and others say, I just think we all have
: different ways of arriving at the same basic result. Different students
: need different approaches. I enjoy this board and have learned from it - A
: hell of a lot about Gore Tex which I've worn for years.
