I can tell you this; from somebody who almost always paddles alone, and who has almost never been in anything but flat water, it is sure a eye-opener to realize how much trouble one could get into, how quickly. No small comfort to even think about being able to roll, much less the improved paddlefloat reentry. Of course, my goal is to expand my horizon safely.
I really dont think there is a way to change people's attitudes. Nor do I think it's right to legislate them. Kind of a tough position to defend if a lot of folks are getting hurt, but after all we should be responsible for our own actions.
: I totally agree. I wish there was an easy way to change people's attitudes
: before something like that happens.: It's not entirely the school's fault--I think most people want to get in a
: kayak and go see whales, seals, dolphins, etc. and don't realize how
: important skills development is. There are schools like George's that have
: a reputation for pushing the student right to the edge of their abilities
: in a safe setting. I think lots of schools cater to people's fear of going
: "too far" and subsequently don't push them far enough. I'd
: personally rather be drilled in class and then never see anything tougher
: in actual conditions.: People just don't realize how nasty the sea can become. They're far better
: off seeking instruction in a difficult setting so they can be competent if
: a difficult situation unexpectedly arises.
