I agree with David here. For some it's just easier for them to focus on a good sweep while relaxing the torso and following the blade with the torso. What you often see is that they THINK they are sweeping way back when in fact they are just getting positioned to do a hip snap. I use all sorts of weird tricks to get people to do what I want them to all the while letting them think they are doing what they want. Sounds strange, but it works. Perfect example is a San Juan guide I worked with this summer. Very strong and also stiff. Guy was locked under the kayak. By focusing on loosining up and sweeping his torso around with head IN THE WATER he quickly had a powerful sweep roll with a strong snap. Now I'm having him focus on snaping sooner and he is doing very well. I tend to hammer people pretty hard once they are rolling, as this is just the start. Tricks like 10 rolls in 30 seconds, etc.. get them to be more instinctive. I like what Jed and others say, I just think we all have different ways of arriving at the same basic result. Different students need different approaches. I enjoy this board and have learned from it - A hell of a lot about Gore Tex which I've worn for years.
