Firstly, I agree completely with Murray's post. Congrat's Don, your drive will serve you well in this sport. But please note, there is little in kayaking that is intuitive and nothing about rolling that is so. A good hour or two spent with a competent instructor can save you many months of wasted time.
: Try first
: coming up with your body along side the kayak - get out from directly
: under it! You'll see this illustrated in all the books and videos, but I
: think it's not verbalized enough by instructors. Keep the head in the
: water, but get up near the surface with the body!!This is one of the two most important things that define a good roll. Few people stress how important body position is, but body position and the hip snap are the two elements common to all successfull rolls. Heed Murray's advise and take him up on his kind offer.
Sore shoulders is an indication of pulling on the paddle. This is not required to right the boat if your body position and hip rotation are done correctly. Pulling on the paddle is also a had habit to break, so best not to fall into that trap at all. Use the paddle to anchor your torso and stop it from sinking during the rotation but never to right the boat itself.
I look forward to following your progress. Best of luck!
