In Response To: Re: What I learned in rolling today... (M. Hamilton)

I am actually kind of crouched up-wards, not hanging vertically. I think its more in the theory that the face has less distance to go... I did notice that the paddle blade is deep when I finish the roll. I had to scull it back up a little, at the end of the roll. I think the problem is that the elbow isnt tucked. I cant figure out what's wrong on the right, though. It should have worked. On the "up" side, the paddle float reentry is a lot stronger! I might be able to do that in rougher water. Maybe. Alder Creek is about an hour from here. I think there's an outfit in Forest Grove, I'll check. The budget's a little thin... You are quite right, an hour or two with someone who knows would assuredly do the trick. Maybe somebody in Beaverton or Hillsboro haunts the board?

Another question; Do croakies work? Anybody out there with glasses had the nerve to roll with them on? And were they still around afterword?

: Gosh, I again aplaud your drive. You will quickly become an expert paddler I
: think. If you are having shoulder pain you are correct in your comment
: about doing something wrong. There should be very little effort placed on
: the paddle. What I often see with students, and I wonder about with you,
: is a lot of arm movement, but a static body. So the arms sweep/move around
: the torso, which stays static under the kayak. A dangerous deal. Try first
: coming up with your body along side the kayak - get out from directly
: under it! You'll see this illustrated in all the books and videos, but I
: think it's not verbalized enough by instructors. Keep the head in the
: water, but get up near the surface with the body!! Now get your arms
: extended out of the water. You should feel it in your side and abdomen.
: Your are wound up so to speak. As you sweep, or place your paddle out to
: the side follow the arm movement with your torso. It's OK to look at the
: paddle. In fact by doing so many beginners keep the head in the water
: longer. I don't want to spoil your fun, but I bet if you went to the
: nearest shop, you'd find someone to help you. Alder Creek I think is near.
: My concern for you is that you may imprint bad form which while short term
: may work, will long term hold you back. Just some thoughts. Take care. Buy
: a tank of gas and come up to LaConner. I'll help you and take you paddling
: in the San Juans. MH
