: a little stressed out there robert? well i would be too if i spent my whole
: summer building a boat. you know what helps me when i'm stressed?
: Kayaking.I'm on the water often and as soon as the ice breaks. Stress, what stress...whose got stress?
: like i said, a fast kayak can only take you so far. but a durable kayak can
: take you even further, just not as fast. hey rob, if speed is the first
: and foremost reason you build wooden kayaks, shouldn't you get a
: composite? or try to make one?My boat has taken me over 1200 kms across Western Canada and that includes through some interesting and potentially nasty WW. She held up well for a wooden toothpick. Average paddling distance per day was 120 kms. Longest paddling day was 180 kms. Paddling technque was variable depending on weather conditions which ranged from bloody nasty to lazy day summer. I get the best of both worlds - a fast and a wooden boat.
: wooden boats are nice....wouldn't wanna scratch something that nice
: looking...I'd be too paranoid. Personally i rather be out on the water
: than spend my time building...hey but that's just me. I thought the seats
: were fine on my kayak....although you probably sat on the calabria, i
: don't think that came with padding. did you try adjusting it? Maybe it
: just wasn't made for your body. have fun with that wooden boat of yours
: rob.Seat adjustment didn't help because the angle of the front of the seat was too high - it stopped blood flow to the toes. The boat weighed a ton and was not very nimble but hey, that was probably just me.
I meant no offence to ya, Freddy. I have a very strong response to spammers and not having read the whole thread lead me to believe you were a spammer. If you are not, then I am glad you love your boat so well. Me, I love building and paddling and I get plenty of both.
I hope you have a great paddling season this year. Looks like mine could start two months earlier because of unseasonably warm weather all winter. The river ice is already breaking up and that means I could be back on the water in three weeks. Oh yeah, my boat has a brass stem band backing up the bow keel and a strong layer of a cabosil/graphite/epoxy mixture on the hull so ramming it up and over all those thick ice pans does nothing more than make light scratches on the hull. Scratches are very easy to repair...perfectly, even gouges, even cracked panels or out right holes.
