: He shouldn't have gone back to work. It's work that causes stress and heart
: failure, not kayaking. The kayaking was too little, too late!: Act young or act old, it's your choice. Don't look to us to rationalize
: staying off the water.Shawn,
Remember our aborted trip up the Olympic Coast this July? The guy that inspired it, with the timing of the trip, hooking up with us at Kalaloch as they were coming all the way up from the Oregon border, is 74 years old. At his retirement from a large aerospace company here in town, he paddled from his home to Ketchikan, taking 60 days. Last year I accompanied him up from near Sitka around the exposed islands and into cross Sound, across Icy Strait and into Glacier. My friend Scott was with him as they paddled from Craig around the Maurelle, Coronation groups and across to Port Alexander on Baranov. On other trips he's paddled the Ketchikan to Craig route and the Sitka to Hot Springs-West Chichigof and Sitka to Pt Alexander.
About 10 years ago he crossed over from Alaska to Russia via the Bering Strait. Done much of the Sea of Cortez, too. Last summer, at 73 he summitted Rainier for the umteenth time. Hell of a resume for retirement, eh?
