: 1. I plan to use kayak for lakes and small rivers, I hear learning to turn
: yourself back up when you go under is the hardest part. Is this a required
: skill before you go out,Rolling isn't a required skill. There is a paddle-float self-rescue too (this is something that you should better know how to do).
:and if so how many times does this happen?
Capsize may not happen for the next several seasons if you paddle a kayak wider than, say, 23" and the highest waves are those from cabin cruisers (they can be nasty too, when cruiser is more like a small ferry).
: 2. What are some of the styles of boats I should be asking about when looking
: to purchase a kyak. I don't need speed, or slick look, just want somthing
: easy and safe to maintain.I think, something about 15-16 ft long and 24" wide, made of either polyethilene (cheaper) or fiberglass (more expensive) will be slow and safe enough. Other classes or options - Touring kayak (not Whitewater), with bulkheads and hatches. Could be with or without rudder. Make sure deck height isn't too low for your shoe size. Seat should be comfortable - preferably foam seat rather than molded plastic existing in some cheap models (your butt will thank you).
: 3. Can I get a price range of whats too much for a beginning kayak.
More than $3400 is perhaps too much (carbon and kevlar kayaks may cost from 3400, but you don't neeed them).
: Any other advice you can give me I would appreciate.
Try a kayak before you buy it. Take 1 or 2 group lessons in the nearest kayaking club or rental shop. They will show and tell you enough for starters.
: Thank you!
