Kayak Forum, I need some advice!

Hello
I'm thinking about purchasing a kayak soon, and I have alot of questions. I feel sort of silly asking some of these so please be as descriptive as possible.
1. I plan to use kayak for lakes and small rivers, I hear learning to turn yourself back up when you go under is the hardest part. Is this a required skill before you go out, and if so how many times does this happen?
2. What are some of the styles of boats I should be asking about when looking to purchase a kyak. I don't need speed, or slick look, just want somthing easy and safe to maintain.
3. Can I get a price range of whats too much for a beginning kayak.
Any other advice you can give me I would appreciate.
