: i'm confused....

I'm sorry I'm confusing you all. I don't mean to. Hard to describe, I'm not the best writer.

: sounded to me like you were talking about a wave that was dumping on your
: head as it had already curled over you and you have said that it's about
: to dump right on you so then that whole reach behind it and draw over it
: thing isn't going to work - you'll be exposing yourself to injury and be
: out of position if you try...

I agree reach behind and draw over is not going to work in the situation I am referring to. But as Brian points out it can be a good alternative to side surfing a spilling wave maybe, although he notes he doesn't recommend it w/o reservations.

: if the wave has not broken and is not dumping on you, if it is spilling then
: try the draw to get over it...it may break but if it's spilling and not
: dumping on top of you then big whup! draw and then bow rudder to get over
: 'er.

I agree. I think this is a different situation from what I was originally trying to describe

: if you are intent on rolling over and taking it on the hull then go
: ahead...just make sure you have enough water under you, no rocks or things
: that are going to smack you noggin...sounds like your in a hurry to get
: upside down for no particular reason.

Maybe I am in a hurry to get inverted, maybe that's just where I am in my learning, maybe I'm just a nutjob. That's why I'm asking questions. I think I got my answer.

: i have only used the duck and cover when at a right angle to a LARGE wave and
: it's dumping directly in front of me or on the front of the boat and i am
: about to be hammered by the force of the foam pile, THEN the roll over and
: take it on the hull thing makes a lot more sense to me...the pile rushes
: over the top, your body acts as a sea anchor and you roll up when the bad
: noises stop....if by some chance i am horizontal to the same thing i am
: going to brace in and bogo and NOT invert....i very well may be there soon
: enough!

That makes sense too. Understand, I am not in huge surf. Pretty good water depth, sandy bottom. This is my first year really learning to play in this stuff, I am experimenting, just starting to develop some good confidence and experience. I'm sorry if I'm confusing. Maybe I'm over reacting to waves that don't need the whole duck and cover thing.
