: Does anyone have any recommendations for VHF emergency radios for kayaking?
The Icom M1V and M88 have proven to be very rugged and reliable. They're my personal choice. Watch for $50 factory rebates on the M88, they happen pretty frequently. Barring that, Defender has them on sale for $228. They have the M1V for $190 and Icom is giving away a free car charger with them. www.defender.com
If the Icoms are out of your price range, consider the Uniden Voyager, but be aware that its small, closely spaced buttons are difficult to operate with gloves on.
Stay away from the Standard Horizon HX460-S, as they are prone to leaking and failure. I had one fail five times and know of MANY others who've experienced failures.
