I have to use one set of uprights like the hullraisers because my car is too narrow for two kayaks side by side. I could have gotten roof racks wider than the car but know I would've been hitting my head all the time. As it is I've walked into the bows of my boats a few times....?slow learner? LOL I've only had trouble in the wind once driving in a strong crosswind and it felt like the upright one was going to fold in two - possibly because my car is so small that the two roof rack bars are pretty close together and also it was a hot day and I find my boats, being plastic tend to get soft in the hot sun. I do use a bowline as well too. I was told always tie it in at least 3 places! Had a wonderful paddle on a lake yesterday - two loons came very close, calling back and forth all the while and one even standing up in the water with his chest raised up. We were so enthralled that it took us a few minutes to notice the babies near shore - they were trying to chase us away from their babies!! We quickly backpaddled out of there!
Happy paddling! Kathy: Kathy,
: I'd skip the rollers and use just saddles front and back. I have two saddles
: on one side and a saddle/roller combo on the other. The boats slide just
: as easily onto the saddles as they do with the rollers (One of my boats is
: a Storm).: In high winds, the saddle system tie-around has some give, so the wind
: doesn't push the car around. The rollers, however, use a tie-around onto
: the crossbars of the rack. In a high wind, the Storm catches the wind and
: the force is transmitted to the car. I was once driving the NY State
: Thruway in very heavy winds and the car was often blown a foot or two
: sideways. A hair-raising drive.: Pamela
