: Great idea! I actually do this when I lead adults on trips, too, except I
: say, "Now without using your grab loop, pop off your spray skirt
: starting NOW!"That's a good one too. I've done that with the kids, but need this variation more often to instill in their thinking that the grab loop isn't the only way to get the skirt off.
: Your rules sound good. One additional factor I'm sure you take into account
: is water temperature. If we're playing in a warm lake or pond, that's one
: thing. If you're out in the San Juans (where I live) that's another.I'm on Liberty Bay in Poulsbo where the surface water temp in the summer routinely can be in the upper 60's, unlike this Saturday -- Out of curiousity I pulled out the thermometer before going out to paddle, surface temp was ~38ºF. Rolling practice was a little chillier than normal -- the kids don't get out too much in the winter months.
: I've heard that my nephew hasn't always been crazy about his swimming
: lessons, but my brother-in-law informed me that's starting to change now
: that my nephew can see that swimming lessons lead to cool things like
: kayaking and SCUBA diving. That's great! Be sure to give us an update as your nephew's kayaking progresses.
