John,
As far as I know the Piccolo was only made in polyethylene. This is just fine with me because my kids are not nearly as careful with their boats as I am. The poly holds up well to rock landings, parking lot drops etc. The only option available was a rudder which I dont think is needed given the boats tracking. For paddles I bought Werner Rec Tour and Rec Tour "S" (on sale for $155 ea. - now $175)
http://www.kayakproshop.com/PaddlesB2.htmlMy neighbor bought some cheap ($50) flat blade aluminum shaft paddles and regretted it. After I bought the Werners, he found the "RS Magic" by Carlisle. I think the Magic would be a better choice for a kids paddle, it has an ABS blade that looks like it would take more abuse than the glass blade on the Werner. The magic is also alot less exspensive - currently $99 with the fiberglass shaft.
http://www.altrec.com/shop/detail/17609/CRLWe noticed a big difference with the girls using the nicer paddles. The lighter swing weight of the Magic & Rec Tour and the shaped blades give their small arms a boost. We may buy some more of the "magic" paddles for use as back-up.
