: Excellent info, Sing. Thank you very much. I'll check out the Carolina 12,
: Episea, and Pilot, too. One of the things I'm looking for is a boat with a
: beam width that is proportionate to a kid's body, and all of these boats
: seem about right. As for boat length, it seems like most of these boats
: run in the range from 10.5 to 14 feet. I was thinking something in the
: middle of that range could last him for many years of growth. Any
: thoughts?: I'm also looking for a kid-sized paddle. What did you find worked best for
: your sons?I personally think the Episea is the better sea kayak for the kid grow into. When they're young, there is enough beam to make it stable. As they get bigger and hopefully more skilled, the longer length and narrower beam will continue to give them something to work on. The Episea has a little more height in the fore deck coaming than the Carolina 12. The reason I switched the boat was that it was getting a little too tight for my kid.
In terms of paddle, Werner has the Lil' Dipper model of various lengths for kids. You can also try the (relatively) longer white water paddles too. Eric Jackson now has two white water paddle sized for kids. One of the better things I did for my kids and wife was to get shorter paddles. Forced them to use a higher stroke and this minimized the yawing from using too long paddles, stoking too horizontally.
