My neighbor and I both bought Wilderness Systems "Piccolos" for our daughters
Aged 9,10 & 11 and petite. The boat has been discontinued but can still be found used and shipped inexpensively. I paid $350 and $425 for a used pair and paid $75 to ship them both from Georgia to West Va.
20" wide x 13'6" lg. weighs 40 lbs - Rated for up to 125 lbs
They track beautifuly and are very stable. We have shared these boats with younger paddlers 7 & 8 years old and they really liked it and learned to handle it very quickly. They have also been used by older kids, 15 & 16, so you should be able to get several good years out of it. I have had my 10 year old on trips up to 8 miles in flatwater and she is able to keep up most of the way.
The picture is my 13 year old in her light blue piccolo during last weekends flood - the link is a dealer in CA that has one listed. You can also look at EpiTykes or EpiSea http://www.emc-epi.com/touring.html from Epi Kayaks, they look similar to the Piccolo and are designed specifically for kids & small adults.
I bought my Piccolos from South East adventure - they have (2) EpiTykes listed and were great to work with.
