re: the North Carolina panther siting.
We've got their cousins in the San Gabriel Mountains just north of Los Angeles. I think because I always hike with my dog I've never seen any. But friends who have say they usually hear them first an almost sub-sonic purring that is unnerving. One friend has seen one and heard one. The mountain lions are very furtive and don't like to be seen.
We don't need to get into what size knife is best with the big cats. You'll never be attacked by one you see. They always strike from the side or from behind. A trick used by the people of the Bengal forest in India is to wear a mask of a face backwards on your head. The tigers there eat people but they never attack from the front and they always turn the victim face down. Wearing the mask makes the tiger feel like he is always being watched.
Also if you should see a California Mtn Lion stalking you they shoo off just like house cats. The more noise and aggression in their direction the better. Basically the opposite of what you'd do with a bear.btw re that bivouac sack photo. I don't think the spoon on his SwissArmyKnife is big enough. I wouldn't go into the woods with anything less than my carbon steel 8" SAS Ghurka Ladle...
