: Full agreement with Shawn. It is irresponsible to not include pepper spray
: (and a few cans of it) The alternative is killing bears that don't need to
: be killed and it is hard to justify that. After all, you are in their
: territory and you likely attracted them -- not enough to sign their death
: warrent. Keep the gun as a back-up and the knife for the day when you
: really want to get hurt bad. For the record, I have paddled a bit in the
: north and have live most of my life in remote bear areas including, for
: the past 25 years, on the last place on a dead end road with Crown land
: and two sides and bears in the area including gizzley (which have even
: munched away in my garden). I've done my research and find Steven Herraro
: (Bear Attack) probably has the most accurate info on the subject. Odds of
: problems are low and spray will likely deal effectively with anything
: which comes up (including the equally dangerous moose).
: good luck
: don

Let's see,
Since the 16th of October, I've seen 20 differnt black bears most of these were within five miles of my house. One son of a bitch just seems to love my garbage can. We do not put food stuff in the trash, he's just curious, but he does make one hell of a mess. for the most part the bears will just leave when they become aware of me (fast), on occasion they will look me over, I've never had one approach me. I have had one run away from my truck, I was going 40mph at the time (better have one fast horse Shawn). I am not advocating shooting at first contact with the bear, nor am I advocating firearms especially pistols, without a whole lot of practice and training. If a black bear is stalking me he has in effect signed his death warrent, either I'll shoot him if I have to, or if I don't have to shoot I'll report him to lhe local warden, and he will.
Of course if a bear would decide that Jayne's garden would be a good source of food she'd probably kill him twice.
It is kind of fun watching them in the apple tree in the side yard.
Bob
