The Flow of Forces

Everything can be measured as a flow of force. To use brute force against brute force means an overpowering force must be utilized to overcome the problem at hand. When I was heading towards that rapid I knew I couldn't backpaddle because the river was too fast. I decided to try to use the force of the current to shoot over the rapid that I couldn't see and rip through it. Sadly, that rock that stopped me cold at the top of the rapid was more forceful. I used this thinking to overcome a much stronger dude in a fight once. I never hurt him but I made him look like a fool because I used his strength against himself. He couldn't catch me despite the faact that we were never a few feet apart. He eventually tired of me and walked away mumbling something to himself.
I'd think the same way in a bear vs. human situation. I read a story once about an inuit who lives at Churchill, Manitoba, polar bear country, who got caught in the open with a bear heading for him. He had no place to run because that would have meant the bear would have run him down and got him one good. He noticed that the bear was turning his heaad sideways to see better. He opted to move to the bear's blind side to avoid being hurt. The inuit managed to avoid the bear out in the open long enough to find sanctuary in a nearby building. That is how to measure up a situation and act. The inuit kept his mind free of panic long enough to see a weakness despite the bear's size and then act to preserve his own life.
There is always a way through a difficulty, it's up to us to find the pathway that exists and it isn't always obvious unless your eyes and mind are open to the possibilities. I suppose that is why I go on the river when it's chock full of ice, there are risks but if I go with the forces instead of work against them I never have much of a problem.
