Where did you read this? The advice given out by the NPS in Glacier NP is "play dead" (until you are) You might be able to discourage a black, but grizzlies are another bear altogether. One actually killed a hunter near here a couple of years ago. It was attracted by his gun shot and attacked him while he was bent over gutting the elk he had killed. Guess his knife didn't help him much. 
:I take every precaution to avoid bears but I must be prepared just in case.
I always carry bear spray (the .45 cal. kind) when in the N. Fork 
(300 grs. of prevention is worth a pound of cure)
