Sounds like your inexperience talking, Bryan

: Sorry, but this sounds like nothing more than a bunch of macho posturing and
: wishful thinking. I could say that I KNOW that if I was attacked by a
: shark while kayaking, I'd bash it on the beak and poke it in the eyes, but
: the truth is that I have no idea how I'd react. You can tell yourself
: anything you want, but the truth is that you have no idea how you'll
: actually react to a bear attack, particularly if it comes as a surprise.I know one thing, Bryan that you don't. Ever headed towards an uncertain waterfall in a high walled narrow gorge that had no escape route full of swift water full of 2-3 foot chop and standign waves at 0-2 C, not knowing where it would be or how far down it would drop or what rocks or type of rapid you were going to encounter above and below it BUT decided to paddle towards it with the determination to make the best of a potentially fatal situation and survive as best as you can? Ever experienced severe panic then thrust it aside within a split second because you knew the panic would kill you if you didn't think straight? Ever been through a watery hell that should have killed you but because you were healthy and strong, you survived to tell the story? Ever busted your boat into smitherines because of such a disaster and remained determined to rebuild it and go right back to where it all happened and succeed with your original intentions?
If you can answer yes to all of these questions, then you just might be qualified to know what you are talking about. I know myself, been tested and I know that if I recognise that I have to do something to preserve my life, I will do my utmost without fear to do what I have to do. I do not fear death so why the hell should I worry if I am about to become bear bait? That said, I'd worry initially but if I was attacked I'd fight until I was disembowled or the bear was laying on me dead with my knife in it. Doubt me if you will, I do not doubt myself and that is what is important. So many people think I am dumb or crazy or wreckless for doing my cross-Canada trip solo. I just know myself and am confident enough to know what I need to do if I get into trouble. If I die being so confident, so what! At least I die doing what I love and not of a cholesterol-induced heart attack because I was overweight from eating too many potatoe chips while watching the idiot box.
This isn't testosterone, it's me being me. Then again, maybe there is a little testosterone in it but if that's what it takes then I guess that's what it takes.
